June 2010 Update

Baby Boomer retirements – and the ramifications for attracting talent . . .

I heard a conference speaker recently talking about the war for talent in this country and how it will get more serious in the coming decade. He cited government statistics showing that there were some 76 million Baby Boomers and only 34 million in Generation X. With over 2,000 Baby Boomers leaving the workforce every day, his contention was that there will be an enormous number of positions (some 6-8 million professional jobs) with no one to fill them. In other words, “we have a serious talent deficit issue on our hands in coming years”.

In our work we see talent deficits in specific disciplines like corporate tax, audit, engineering, software, healthcare, and many technical trades. But whether those have any relationship to the generational transition going on, I do not know. Perhaps he was oversimplifying to make a point. However, the speaker’s comments have me digging in on some research of my own regarding generational changes and the future of talent acquisition in the United States, in particular. I will share some of my findings in future newsletters.

Perhaps you have read a good article or book on the subject that you would like to share, or some anecdotal information. I would love to have your insight!
